Many of my clients know that I lead a retreat every year (for women) in Hawaii.
I decided to do this work about ten years ago .. FIVE years before I actually launched my first retreat experience.
I was the mother of three young children at the time (twins who were two years old and a son who was six). I was working full, full time and managing a household filled with activities, a wonderful husband and two dogs!
I love, love, love my children and my husband and our dogs.
But, I also needed some time for me and at that point of my life, that time was such a luxury.
In fact, if I could get a few moments alone in Target, the grocery store or even the BATHROOM I savored it!
One of the tenants I live my life by, is that in order for me to be my best self for everyone else, I have to offer myself time to think, reflect and plan … Plan my life, my work and my MIND.
When we lead others, either as parents or managers or community influencers… etc… we have other people relying on US to have clarity in our thinking and a clear vision.
If we are inviting others to follow us, shouldn’t we know where we are going?
This is why I go to Hawaii every October and I invite others to join me.
I need this time.
I leave this experience with a notebook full of insights and personal aha’s.
For me, the waves hold my secrets.
When I take a moment to think by the sea, it’s like she knows I’m there and can whisper back to me those dreams and ideas and longings I’ve shoved away because of the busy-ness of our lives.
So whatever it is you do for you, I invite you to plan it.
When will be the next time you will reserve some space on your calendar just-for-you?
I know it feels indulgent.
I know it feels like there isn’t any time.
I know there are so many other people and things and events and deadlines that are calling for your attention.
I really do get it.
And yet… I also know…
That when you invest in YOU everyone benefits.
When you get clear, you are so much more able to help others.
When you sit with your own mind and your own ideas and your own dreams… just for a moment… You begin the process of putting your brilliance into action.
For me, that’s on the beach, in a beach chair, with my toes in the sand and the sound of the waves…
And if nothing else, think about it this way…
Every organization I know has an annual (sometimes quarterly) planning event.
Leaders take off for a few days and come up with their strategic plan for the year.
They plan out their key objectives and how they will get there.
They push themselves to come up with new ideas that will keep the company thriving and successful.
Why don’t we do that for ourselves?
How can we expect to be maximizing the lives we are living and the gifts we have to offer others, if we don’t land the plane for a minute and decide if we are where we want to be?
We all need a moment-to-think.
Men, women, moms, dads, managers, CEOs…. All of us.
Refresh your spirit, so that you can pour into those who rely on you most.
