What if it were really true?
What if difficult doesn’t exist?
I taught a “How to Coach Difficult People” course for managers this week.
Each manager came with their example(s) of how employees are difficult.
They are disrespectful
They are rude
They don’t do their work
They come to work late
They don’t finish projects
I introduced them to the idea that none of these are actually difficult.
They are simply behaviors.
How we define the behaviors is what makes them difficult.
As a manager, your job is to manage outcomes.
Your job is NOT to change people.
Take that one off your list (good news)!
In order to effectively lead and manage a team, you just need to hold your folks accountable for meeting the objectives of their position.
Look at the list above.
Can you relate to them?
If so and you have employees who demonstrate these behaviors ask yourself… SO WHAT? How do these behaviors impact their work performance?
Focus on behavior and facts and then provide feedback.
Stay away from character, personality and/or your opinion of their behavior.
Just state the facts and their impact.
Simple. Clean. Easy.
You can do this.
We all can.
Imagine how much easier your day would be if you chose to believe that NOTHING is difficult?
Make sure you check out the podcast! You’ll find more tips on dealing with all things difficult!
I have a couple of spots left in my Hawaii retreat. I think you should come!
