Are you dealing with a difficult boss? If so you’re undoubtedly frustrated, but before making the decision to quit you owe it to yourself to do a little work and see if you can make it better. Here are a few steps for dealing with that difficult boss.
What You’ll Learn From This Episode:
- Name it – name what’s difficult about that person and name it in a behavior – like pushy, aggressive, rude, steals ideas, embarrasses you, etc.
- Define why that behavior is difficult for you. Just because you think something is difficult doesn’t mean it’s intentional. It doesn’t mean they’re a bad person. Focus on behavior – not personality and not character.
- Acknowledge what you wish wasn’t. People aren’t going to change their behavior just because you don’t like it. Figure out how to make this work for you and gain that skill. Instead of acquiescing all your power and wishing it would stop.
- Figure out what your boss wants. What are they trying to achieve? Are you helping them? Do they see you as their partner or their adversary? I believe our encounters with difficult people are a great time to develop a new skill or two. What’s one thing you could focus on that would help the relationship?
